Forty & Eight Nurses Training Scholarship Program

Supporting Kenosha County Nursing Students Since 1955

A Legacy of Service

The Forty & Eight is an honor society of American veterans, founded in 1920 by soldiers returning from World War I. Our name comes from the French boxcars marked “40 Hommes/8 Chevaux” (40 men or 8 horses) that transported American troops to the front lines—a shared experience that bound all who served together.

Today, we continue our legacy of service through charitable programs that support our communities. One of our most impactful initiatives is the Nurses Training Scholarship Program.

Why Nursing Education Matters

Veterans know firsthand the critical importance of skilled, compassionate nurses. On the battlefield, doctors were essential—but it was often the nurses who saved lives, providing care under the most difficult circumstances. Without them, many wounded service members would never have made it to medical treatment.

That experience drives our commitment to nursing education today.

The healthcare system faces a critical shortage:

  • The United States is currently 26,000 nurses short of what’s needed
  • By 2028, we’ll need an additional 37,000 nurses to meet demand
  • The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted just how essential nurses are to our communities

Your nursing education is an investment in the health and wellbeing of our entire community.

Our Impact: 70 Years of Supporting Nurses

Since formally establishing the Nurses Training Program in 1955, the Forty & Eight has:

  • Awarded over $20 million in nursing scholarships nationwide
  • Helped 32,000+ students complete their nursing education
  • Distributed $1.1 million in Wisconsin alone last year
  • Graduated thousands of RNs who now serve in hospitals, clinics, and care facilities across the country

Voiture 410, serving Kenosha County, is proud to continue this tradition of supporting local nursing students.
